About Bed Sores

Bed sores (often called pressure sores, pressure ulcers or decubitus ulcers) are painful sores that immobile nursing home residents sometimes experience. They are extremely vulnerable to infection and, if left untreated, can lead to sepsis and wrongful death.

Bed sores most often form on pressure points — the tailbone, heels and elbows. They occur when a particular part of the body is exposed to pressure for an extended period of time. It is broken down and rubbed away, leaving a painful sore.

Through adequate care and repositioning, the vast majority of bed sores are preventable. Unfortunately, many nursing homes are understaffed and their residents do not receive the level of care they deserve. Residents are left in beds or wheelchairs for extended periods of time without being turned or repositioned. And, sadly, this neglect can lead to devastating effects for the elderly and their families.

Residents of assisted living centers may also suffer from bed sores when they are inappropriately placed in a facility and need a greater level of care than is provided for them.

Families visiting a loved one in a nursing home should follow our tips for keeping a loved one safe and check for bed sores. Repositioning an elderly or disabled resident can help you identify problem areas before they become bed sores.
